Lower Level of the Museum
Last year, the kids of Edmonds named our mascot Chip the Beaver. His ancestor (also named Chip) can be found on the lower level of the Museum. You might be lucky to see Chip in the Edmonds Marsh (and thanks to Laura Walls and Marthlyn Jones for the photo).
You can see the family resemblance! Beavers are truly remarkable creatures, often called nature’s engineers for their ability to transform entire landscapes. With powerful teeth and an instinct for design, they fell trees and build intricate dams and lodges that create wetlands—vital habitats for countless other species. These wetlands also help purify water, control floods, and recharge groundwater, making beavers essential allies in environmental restoration.
Their ability to alter ecosystems rivals that of the early Edmonds settlers, with benefits that ripple across generations. What’s even more amazing is that all of this complex behavior comes not from blueprints or instruction but from innate knowledge passed through evolution and experience.
